Green Revolution: WEP-TOGO and GERES train Women farmers in sustainable conservation!

To optimize the value chain and strengthen the autonomy of producers, the NGO WEP-TOGO, in collaboration with the Group for the Rational Exploitation of Solar Energy (GERES), organized a practical training workshop on November 13, 2025 at the Kékéliva farm school in Nyogbo-Nord (Agou 1 Commune in Togo) , for groups of women farmers from Kékéliva on harvesting, processing and preservation techniques for market garden products.

A vital issue for vulnerable women farmers

Agriculture is the cornerstone of the Togolese economy, and women play a central role in it. However, they often face major challenges, particularly significant post-harvest losses of market garden produce. These losses, due to a lack of appropriate preservation techniques, reduce their income, threaten their households' food security, and hinder the sustainability of their activities. In response to this reality, the NGO WEP-TOGO, with financial support from the organization GERES (Group for the Rational Exploitation of Solar Energy), organized an innovative training workshop.

Optimize the harvest, transform the future

This workshop is part of the project "Strengthening the Climate Resilience of Women Farmers in the Kekeliva Groups in the Commune of Agou 1," supported by the FAME program (Feminism: Action and Mobilization for an Inclusive Economy). The overall objective is to strengthen the capacities of women farmers at the Kekeliva farm school in harvesting and preservation techniques, while integrating sustainable energy technologies for improved profitability.

Specifically, this involves: • Strengthening women farmers' knowledge of best practices for harvesting vegetable products, particularly okra, to preserve its quality. • Training women in various preservation methods, with an emphasis on the use of sustainable energy technologies (such as solar drying). • Increasing women's income by equipping them with the skills to process fresh okra into dried okra using sustainable equipment. • Sharing knowledge about the economic and environmental benefits of these sustainable practices.

Solar energy in the service of women's economic empowerment

The integration of sustainable energy technologies, such as solar drying, is a promising solution. It not only reduces waste but also adds value to processed products, improves women's livelihoods, and promotes environmentally friendly practices. During this training, participants acquired essential knowledge and practical skills, with a focus on okra processing.

Concrete results and mastery of techniques

Upon completion of the training, participants are now able to:

• Apply best harvesting practices for optimal quality. • Use various preservation methods based on sustainable technologies.

• Master the techniques for processing fresh okra into dried okra.

• Understand the importance of adding value to processed products to increase their income.

WEP-TOGO and GERES initiative is a decisive step towards climate resilience and the economic empowerment of women farmers, making Togolese agriculture a model of sustainability and innovation.
